Bihari Snack Gift Ideas for Festivals, Weddings and Family

Bihari snacks make better gifts than mithai because they travel well and mean something specific. Combinations for every occasion, plus practical sending tips.

There is a particular kind of homesickness that food fixes and nothing else does. For Biharis living in Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune or further afield, it is usually triggered by something small — the smell of ghee and jaggery, the snap of a fresh thekua.

Which is why sending Bihari snacks to family works better as a gift than almost anything you could buy in a shop.

Why traditional snacks travel well as gifts

Most Indian sweets are difficult to send. Milk-based mithai spoils within days, needs refrigeration and rarely survives a courier journey intact.

Thekua has the opposite problem, which is to say no problem. It is dry, low-moisture and slow-fried — it keeps for weeks at room temperature and arrives in the same condition it left in.

It also carries meaning in a way a box of assorted mithai does not. Thekua is not a generic sweet; it is the Bihari sweet. Sending it says something specific.

Which thekua to send, and to whom

For someone who has moved away recently

Regular thekua. This is the everyday version — what would actually sit in the container at home, eaten with evening chai rather than saved for an occasion. It is the most straightforwardly nostalgic choice.

For Chhath Puja

Desi ghee thekua, in quantity. For families observing Chhath outside Bihar, having correct prasad matters more than variety, and ghee-fried is the customary form. Order well ahead — demand rises sharply in the weeks before the festival.

If you are new to the festival, our Chhath Puja guide explains what goes in the soop and why.

For elders

Desi ghee thekua. Ghee-fried is the version most older Biharis grew up with, and jaggery is gentler than refined sugar. It is also the version most likely to be recognised as having been made properly.

For someone who has never tried Bihari food

Regular thekua, with a little context. Thekua is unlike anything in the standard Indian sweet repertoire — not syrupy, not milk-based, closer to a dense rustic cookie. Sending what is thekua alongside it helps.

For an office or a large group

Larger quantities of regular thekua. It needs no plates, no cutlery and no refrigeration, and it does not go soft sitting out on a desk for a day.

Occasions beyond festivals

Chhath and Diwali are obvious, but thekua suits a wider set of moments:

  • Weddings — traditional snacks are still exchanged between families in Bihar, and thekua works well as a guest favour.
  • Housewarmings — particularly for someone setting up a home in a new city.
  • New baby — jaggery-based sweets are customarily given to new mothers in Bihar.
  • Exam season — students in hostels appreciate something that keeps without a fridge.
  • Simply because — an unannounced box of thekua carries more weight than most planned gifts.

Practical notes on sending

Order early for festivals. Small-batch makers cannot scale indefinitely, and the fortnight before Chhath is when everything sells out.

Tell them how to store it. A quick message saying "airtight container, not the fridge" prevents a good box going soft. Our guide on storing thekua covers it.

Send desi ghee for longer journeys. Ghee is more stable than refined oil and stays fragrant longer, which matters if delivery takes a few days.

Include a note. Obvious, but the snack does its emotional work best when the person knows who sent it and why.

Sending a box

We ship freshly made thekua from Bihar across India — small batches, pure jaggery, no preservatives, no artificial flavours, packed to arrive intact.
