Chhath Puja is a four-day festival — Nahay Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya — dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya. Devotees, especially the vratis (fasting worshippers), observe a rigorous 36-hour nirjala fast (without even water) and offer arghya to the setting and rising sun at riverbanks and ponds.

How Thekua is Offered During Chhath
On the evening of Sandhya Arghya (day 3) and the morning of Usha Arghya (day 4), thekua is arranged in bamboo soops (winnowing baskets) along with seasonal fruits, sugarcane, coconut and kasar (rice-flour laddoos). The vrati stands waist-deep in water and offers the soop to the sun, as the family prays alongside. After the final arghya, thekua is distributed as the most treasured prasad.
